Pañchakarma during menstruation is contraindicated. It must be scheduled around the menstrual cycle or period. If menstruation should begin during Pañchakarma the program will be stopped and modified.
There are three stages of Pañchakarma. At MD Ayurveda, your program will be scheduled, as best as possible, so that menstruation begins during the second part of Stage One.
Here’s How To Plan Pañchakarma Around Your Period
Stage One is the metabolic preparation stage. It may begin one day to six months prior to the start of your actual on-site treatment.
At this time, the Vaidya or Ayurvedic Specialist will instruct you on how to prepare your GI tract for cleansing. Preparing your digestive tract properly for the next step is important for successful outcomes.
During the next part of Stage One, you will be asked to drink a specified dosage of fats to oleate your body internally. Ideally, consumption of ghee or oil begins as soon as active bleeding ends.
"Ideally, consumption of ghee or oil begins as soon as active bleeding ends."
This allows the maximum amount of time for the entire duration of the Pañchakarma program before the next menstrual cycle begins. After consuming the fat internally, you will undergo external oleation with Ayurvedic massage or abhyanga.
When Pañchakarma During Menstruation Is Unavoidable
For some women, the internal and external oleation can reset the hormonal cycle and initiate a sudden, unexpected bleeding phase. If this happens, the period cannot be controlled or stopped. Instead, the entire Pañchakarma must be adjusted. Generally, the Ayurvedic Specialist will stop the procedure and restart it when the period ends.
Stage Two is one day of cleansing. This stage cannot occur when there is active bleeding. On this day you will be given instructions and formulations for cleansing. Your progress will be monitored throughout the day.
After cleansing, Stage Three begins the process of regeneration. This stage promotes anti-aging. During this stage, transition to a normal, proper diet and lifestyle is gradually introduced. Ayurvedic formulations may be recommended.
Expect to discuss your menstrual cycle with your Ayurvedic Specialist during your pre-assessment. Pañchakarma during menstruation is not possible. So it is important to plan Pañchakarma around your period, as best as possible. That way, the maximum amount of time is available to you during your Pañchakarma. And if all goes as planned, your program can occur without interruption.
